On November 18, 2025, four premed fellows testified for H4622, an act to protect the lives of student athletes (Freddy’s Law). H4622 is designed to protect the lives of student athletes from preventable cardiac arrests using heart screenings.

This bill will require all high school athletes to undergo an ECG screening prior to participating in school sports. The law aims to find previously undetected heart issues that can result in sudden cardiac arrest, so that the risk of tragedy is lowered. ECG screenings in student athletes will flag high-risk heart conditions, allowing for treatment before physical exertion in a high school sports session triggers a cardiac event. More specifically, it aims to direct and assist the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association in developing policies and procedures to require high school athletes to complete at least one electrocardiogram screening prior to participation in interscholastic athletic competition beginning in the 2026-2027 school year.
