Program Description:
Dr. Kuohung and two premedical fellows volunteered with Waves of Health to provide free medical care in Dajabon, Dominican Republic. Founded in 2007, the secular, non-profit organization is dedicated to addressing the primary healthcare needs of underserved communities in the developing world through biannual medical mission trips to the same community. The mission spanned one week and was led by an interdisciplinary team of physicians from the US and the DR, nurses, medical assistants, pharmacists, and volunteers. Over 1100 patients were seen and treated for a variety of health concerns.
A noteworthy observation during the trip was the financial barriers preventing many patients from affording sunscreen. Consequently, we encountered numerous cases of extensive sun damage and skin cancer, necessitating on-site excisions. Additionally, we saw many children and adults with eczema which can be managed with a moisturizer such as Vaseline. Recognizing the accessibility challenges faced by the community in obtaining these essential products, our team is now actively coordinating donations of sunscreen and moisturizers for the upcoming medical mission.
