Choosing a career and defining one’s sense of purpose is a significant endeavor, especially for young individuals who often find themselves grappling with these profound questions. Premedical fellows led two workshops on discernment and habit building for an eighth grade class at St. Paul Choir School on February 6, 2023 and February 13, 2023.
During the initial workshop, the fellows shared their own origin stories and the meandering paths they took as premedical students. They actively engaged the class in exploring each student’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as setting personal goals. As part of the workshop, students were assigned homework, prompting them to reflect on their 70-year-old selves. Questions such as “What does this look like for you?” and “Who will be in your life?” were posed, encouraging students to contemplate what will be important to them and why.
In the subsequent workshop, each student shared their reflections along with a personally meaningful quote that encapsulated what purpose meant to them. The overarching goal of these workshops was to instill reflective habits and skills in each student, providing them with tools they can carry into the future as they pursue their goals.
